SEAGLE MUSIC COLONY DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT
Seagle Music Colony (SMC) is the oldest summer vocal training program in the United States, located in the town of Schroon Lake in the Adirondack Mountain Region of upstate New York. Our summer program is a nine-week session in which 32 emerging artists, with an average age range of 20-26 and selected through a rigorous national audition/selection process, receive intensive training in vocal technique, acting and career preparation. As part of this training, we produce five full-scale productions of opera and musical theatre each summer season for presentation to the public. SMC also holds an early-fall season that keeps four artists in residence through mid-October and produces outreach and in-school opera programs. In recent years, several new opera development workshops have also been held during the fall season at SMC. SMC operates on a 32-acre campus and facilities include the 175-seat Oscar Seagle Memorial Theatre, the Shames Rehearsal Studio a theatrical scene and costume shop, a common dining facility with a commercial kitchen, rehearsal spaces, and various cottages and dormitories for artist and staff housing. The SMC Board of Directors is following a strategic plan that calls for increased utilization of the campus facilities through a focus on new work development in the shoulder (spring and fall) seasons, with long-term goals of increasing brand awareness, engaging additional audience and supporters, and continuing campus improvements to serve existing and new programs.
The Director of Development position is a full-time position that begins early in 2017. The Director of Development will play a highly-visible role in leading SMC’s institutional strategy to increase contributed income, elevate SMC’s public profile, and strengthen the organization’s philanthropic base. SMC’s operating budget for fiscal year 2017 is $725,000 with a goal of $400,000 in contributed income. The Director of Development will report to the General Director, and work in close contact with the Artistic Director. The Director of Development will be an integral member of the senior management team, and will have direct interaction with the Board of Directors, external partners and donors, prospective funders, and community stakeholders. The Director of Development will be required to spend summers in Schroon Lake in provided campus housing (if necessary), with frequent visits possible during the rest of the year.
In collaboration with the General Director and Artistic Director, the Director of Development will build and execute a comprehensive development program that results in short-term gains and significant long-term growth of philanthropic support together with increased institutional visibility and reach. The Director of Development will possess the experience, skills, and diplomacy necessary to think strategically, work independently and on team projects, and identify relationships and partnerships that will enable SMC to fulfill its strategic initiatives. Some specific duties are listed below.
- Determine and deliver on goals and priorities that will enhance SMC’s institutional profile and increase its capacity to fulfill its mission and vision.
- Lead SMC’s development initiatives to successfully achieve its annual contributed revenue goals from individuals, corporations, foundations, and governments, with an emphasis on identifying, cultivating, and securing new major gifts
- Lead SMC’s development initiatives to achieve goals in an ongoing capital campaign with focus on funding for capital projects (including a new theater and additional campus buildings), endowment and operating reserve funds.
- Manage an accurate and up-to-date portfolio of institutional and individual donors by cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding relationships with new and existing supporters • Manage the donor acknowledgement process, including oversight of mailings, reports, and program book listings
- Represent SMC at fundraising and other events • Possess a working knowledge of trends throughout the industry in development and fundraising • Research foundational and government grant opportunities, and write applications
- Develop a planned giving program, informing and educating SMC’s constituents about opportunities to support SMC through bequests and deferred gifts
- Provide guidance and direction to stimulate involvement and best utilize the fundraising abilities and resources, as well as community ambassadorship connections, of the SMC Board of Directors
- Assist in the strategy and implementation of Board prospect identification, cultivation, and recruitment
- Expand outreach to potential strategic partners with the goal of increasing SMC’s community footprint and value to the region
- Recruit, hire, and manage any other members of the development team as needed
- Attend and participate in meetings of the SMC Board of Directors
A Bachelor’s degree at minimum is required, with at least five years of fundraising experience, including proven success in building one or more major gifts. Knowledge of opera and musical theater is preferred. Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and donor database software are required. As an effective spokesperson for SMC, the Director of Development must possess excellent organizational, written, oral, and interpersonal skills. Some knowledge of the philanthropic landscape of the Adirondack region is preferred but not required. Please note that some evening and weekend work is a requirement of this position.
The salary for this full-time position is competitive and will be commensurate with experience. Health, dental and vision insurance benefits will also be offered.
