About the Lyric Opera of Kansas City

Lyric Opera in Kansas City brings high quality live operatic performance to the people of the Kansas City area and a five-state region. The Company mounts productions that enrich the community it serves, as well as reflect the highest artistic standards of the profession.  Lyric Opera offers innovative and award-winning programs designed to further music and arts education both in schools and in the community and serves more than 18,000 students and educators each year.

Lyric Opera is proud to produce at the state-of-the-art Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.  Since moving there, Lyric Opera has taken advantage of the visionary space by staging ambitious and innovative productions of much-loved classics, such as The Magic Flute designed by Jun Kaneko, as well as rarely-performed operas like I Capuleti e I Montecchi (The Capulets and The Montagues), starring opera powerhouse Joyce DiDonato.  During the 2014-15 season the company staged a production of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Silent Night, which The Kansas City Star called, “one of its finest performances in recent memory.”

In addition to groundbreaking performances, Lyric Opera of Kansas City engages the broader  community in operatic experiences through a wide array of education and outreach programs for youth and adults, alike.

A level 2 opera company with an annual budget of approximately $7.1 million, in 2012 Lyric Opera opened its new 58,000-square-foot opera center campus, comprised of administrative offices, a 12,000-square-foot set storage facility and full production center with a 4,500-square foot rehearsal space.

Kansas City:

Located in the heart of the Midwest, Kansas City blends the charms of Midwestern life with the advantages of living in a large metropolitan area.   Kansas City is home to world-class museums, theaters, and extraordinary Moshe Safdie-designed performing arts center that is home to our Opera, Symphony and Ballet.  This, combined with vibrant new entertainment and shopping districts, emerging tech firms, and thousands of new housing starts in the downtown and mid-town areas, have helped make Kansas City an emerging metro ranked by publications like Huffington Post and the NY Times as one of the “coolest” or “hippest” cities in the U.S.  Since the first gallery opened there in 1985, Kansas City’s Crossroads District – home to the Lyric – has established itself as a center for emerging art and technology.  Today it is a mixed-use neighborhood with a distinctive vibe and with abundant options for living, shopping, entertainment and work.
