Job Title: Development Officer II
Reports to: Director of Development
Classification: Fulltime, Exempt
Revision date: November 2016
As a Development Officer at Houston Grand Opera, you will raise money from a diverse base of donors, subscribers, and ticket-buyers to ensure the future of world-class opera in Houston. We do this two ways: 1) stewardship and continued cultivation of our existing constituency of loyal donors, and 2) seek out those opera lovers who are ready to become involved philanthropically with HGO.
Our team has a particular emphasis on increasing the number of Patron-level donors, those who give $5,000 or more annually. This position seeks someone who is dynamic, hard-working, nimble, and team-oriented. Members of the HGO Development department are at the top of the development field, working at the highest level of professional excellence and integrity.
At Houston Grand Opera, ticket sales and subscriptions only cover 25% of the total expenses. The Development Department has the vitally important task of fundraising approximately $16 million annually so that HGO may continue presenting unforgettable opera not just for subscribers and ticket-buyers, but for the greater Houston community.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of prospective and current donors.
- Identify HGO subscribers and members with greater interest and capacity for deeper HGO involvement through personal visits.
- Actively seek out potential Patrons Circle members from the current donor base.
- Participate in special project or production fundraising.
ESSENTIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required. At least three years professional development experience in non-profit organizations, with experience in donor cultivation and solicitation. Proven success in face-to-face solicitation, managing a donor portfolio, and providing excellent service to donors. Knowledge of principles of fund raising. Experience with fundraising software programs, particularly Tessitura, is a plus. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Evening and weekend work required.
SPECIAL JOB CHARACTERISTICS:
The applicant must possess strong interpersonal skills without fear of soliciting funds on behalf of HGO, confidence without self-importance. Proven ability to remain calm under pressure. Successful candidates will have strong self-motivation with an affinity for team-based environments. Knowledge of opera not necessary, but passion for the arts is a must.
