Running Man is a new music-theater piece, a "roots" opera that explores, through poetry and jazz, the emotional and psychological identity of the central character (the Running Man), his African American family, and the disappearance of an indigenous rural culture to American mainstream society. The piece is set against the backdrop of World War II and the migration of Southern agrarian families to the great cities of the North, and captures the vibrant spirit of a culture and a people that lived along the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia from the 1930s to the 1950s.
