Prologue: A visitor of Heathcliff's, Mr. Locke, is stranded at Wuthering Heights by a snowstorm. That night Heathcliff is awakened by Mr. Locke, who has had a nightmare about Cathy. Heathcliff, upon hearing of his dream, runs out into the snow in search of Cathy.

Act I: Twenty years earlier, Heathcliff and Cathy are seen together in the moors. Heathcliff was taken in as a child by Cathy's father but is despised by Cathy's brother Hindley.

Act II: Cathy accepts the attentions of another suitor, Edgar, whom Heathcliff distrusts. Cathy confesses to her maid, Nelly, that she has agreed to marry Edgar but is secretly in love with Heathcliff. Heathcliff overhears this and flees.

Act III: Three years later, Heathcliff visits Cathy and her husband, Edgar. In revenge, Heathcliff courts Edgar's sister, Isabella. Cathy, extremely distressed, becomes very ill.

Act IV: Heathcliff and Isabella have married, but Heathcliff has made his wife's life a living hell. Cathy returns to Wuthering Heights and dies in Heathcliff's arms.
