Harry Somers, one of Canada's foremost opera and musical creators explored the themes of mythic first encounters in both works included in Soundstreams Canada's The Merman of Orford and The Death of Enkidu.
Each of these innovative musical theatre/opera works is based on a theme of violent first encounters with the alien and the monstrous, based on stories from myth and legend. The violent aftermath to first encounters with the stranger or the alien has long been a theme of story, song and film, as well as being a theme with meaning in our modern world and inner selves.
Soundstreams Canada invited the public and the arts community to engage in exploration of this theme through a multi-disciplinary series. Both light-hearted and serious presentations explored the theme of first encounters from a literary, film, psychological ans historical/political perspective. Reaching out to the genre fiction, film, psychological and peace activist community, our goal was to engage communities with little or no exposure to new Canadian opera.
