A young couple living in a gentrified Manhattan apartment [formerly occupied by Della and Jim in the companion opera, Della’s Gift] run up against the demands of family at Christmas. They have more than the usual obstacles to overcome: they are from different races and cultures, and of the same sex. Misunderstanding and prejudices put pressure on them as they prepare for a ceremony of commitment.
