Research is invaluable for understanding the health of an opera company and for developing short- and long-term growth strategies. Throughout the year, OPERA America calls upon its Professional Company Members to complete surveys that shed light on various aspects of the field, including finance, artistic programming, education, human resources, and marketing and PR. These surveys provide crucial snapshots of the field and allow OPERA America to track trends among opera producers from year to year.

Performing Arts Research Coalition
The Performing Arts Research Coalition (PARC) was a collaborative project that sought to improve the way performing arts organizations gather information. The process was developed in 10 cities and involved four types of data collection: administrative data, audience surveys, subscriber surveys and household surveys.
PARC was funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts and was a partnership among five national service organizations: The League of American Orchestras, Association of Performing Arts Presenters, Dance/USA, OPERA America and Theatre Communications Group. The Urban Institute was the project's research partner.

Professional Opera Survey
OPERA America continues its partnership with the DataArts
(formerly the Cultural Data Project) to conduct the annual Professional Opera Survey (POS), which captures the financial standing of OPERA America members. The responses provided take into account various revenue streams, as well as the costs of producing operatic performances. The results of the survey are published in OPERA America’s Annual Field Report, which appears each year in the winter issue of Opera America
magazine. The FY 2016 Survey is now open.

The Development Survey provides a study of philanthropic tendencies in the opera field. Data provided by member companies offers insight into donor pyramid proportions, institutional giving, young professional programs, board engagement, staffing structures and more. The findings are available in aggregate to the staff of participating companies. Next survey

Education and Community Engagement Survey
The Education and Community Engagement Survey provides detailed information on the breadth and depth of opera education across North America. Through analysis of financial information, details of individuals and groups served, and program types as reported by Professional Company Members, the final report allows companies to compare impact and infrastructures and begin conversations about trends and best practices in the field. Human Resources Survey
The Human Resources Survey provides detailed information on salaries and benefits at opera companies. It also looks at the demographics of staff and boards. All statistics are presented anonymously to provide confidentiality, but companies are grouped by budget size so that comparisons to peers can accurately be made. Next survey

The annual Marketing/PR Survey, open to Professional Company Members, provides detailed information on opera companies’ ticket sales, social media efforts, advertising expenditures, venues and other similar marketing topics. The resulting report, available only to staff of those companies that participate in the survey, provides data to inform decision-making and ideas to inspire future projects. Next survey
