Production Manager

Production Manager

Full-time, exempt

The Florentine Opera Company is seeking a full-time Production Manager to oversee the company’s main stage productions, @ the Center productions, community engagement events, special events and any other events that require production support.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and supervise production budgets (including some facilities and artistic); process, track and reconcile all production expenses.
  • Develop and administer production calendars and design deadlines for each production. Determine load-in and tech schedules for the stage. Schedule all design and production meetings.
  • Guide all director/design teams through the design process to guarantee the timely completion of all designs. With the input of appropriate technical staff, analyze all designs submitted to determine feasibility of execution within the allotted time, money and personnel available. Coordinate and conduct all design and production meetings.
  • Hire, contract and supervise, in consultation with the Director of Artistic Administration when appropriate, all production staff and contractors including, but not limited to: designers, stage managers, assistant stage managers, costume shop manager, resident wig and make-up designer, supernumeraries, properties, stagehands, artist transportation driver and any additional personnel required for specific production needs.
  • Facilitate clear communications throughout the production process, and act as a liaison between directors, designers, stage managers, and FOC production and administrative staff. 
  • Attend staging rehearsals, designer run, technical rehearsals and performances as necessary.
  • Maintain department contact information and production rosters. Serve as liaison to labor unions for actors, stage managers and designers. Ensure company compliance with all union rules.
  • Responsible for HR documentation for all production personnel, including but not limited to: prepare contracts, collect tax forms, process and sign time sheets and handle the initial paperwork for Workers' Compensation for all production department-related claims.
  • Oversee inventory and maintenance of all shop, lighting, costume and supertitle equipment. Oversee all routine facility supply stocking, general facility hardware, and stage supplies.
  • Responsible for general upkeep of the facility through either the execution of small repairs or identifying the need for outside labor and working directly with the landlord. With Education and Community Engagement Manager, oversee maintenance for the company van.
  • Secure and distribute parking (cards) for artistic and production personnel at performance venue.
  • Hire and oversee light walkers and their schedules.
  • Communicate backstage security list for the performance venue.
  • Oversee set and costume rentals.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/ university in opera preferred and 4-6 years of working experience
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills including the ability to interact with all staff, management, artists, and the public in a professional and tactful manner
  • Some knowledge of State and Federal safety regulations is helpful. 
  • Ability to coordinate many tasks, setting appropriate priorities and completing work on schedule with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise judgment and initiative. Maintain confidentiality and provide excellent customer service.
  • Comfort and working knowledge of AutoCAD/Vectorworks is highly preferred.
  • Knowledge of stagecraft, theatre production, scenic and costume construction. 
  • Some knowledge of opera repertoire or music background is a plus but not required.
  • Be a motivated self-starter who also works well in a larger team.  
  • Demonstrate leadership in accordance with the Florentine's mission and vision.
  • As the business evolves, so may this role. These duties may change as company leadership identifies the need at any time.

 Work Conditions:

  • The job sometimes requires six-day or seven-day workweeks as well as evenings during production periods.  
  • Sitting and standing for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and to handle other office equipment.
  • Ability to see clearly in low-light situations such as are common backstage and in the theatre; walk and stand on complex stage settings throughout day-to-day activities.
