Executive Director (ED) Position Summary

Tri-Cities Opera (TCO) seeks applications for the position of Executive Director from Individuals with broad practical experience in not for profit company administration and community engagement.  To steer the company in the realization of its short-term and long-range goals, TCO is seeking an entrepreneurial, collaborative leader to serve as Executive Director. This is a full-time position, requiring residence in the Southern Tier of New York year-round. 

The Executive Director provides leadership and oversight for managing the day to day operations of the company, overseeing and directing all financial matters, institutional advancement, communications, and personnel in fulfillment of the mission of Tri-Cities Opera.  The Executive Director works closely with the Artistic Director as well as the music and production personnel. 

Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director serves as the chief administrative and financial officer of the company, working in close collaboration with the Artistic Director in carrying out TCO’s mission and vision.  The Executive Director’s position would begin on or about July 1st or soon hereafter.

Tri-Cities Opera has been the cultural centerpiece of the Southern Tier of New York for Seventy years.  Founded in 1949, this regional opera company enjoys an exceptional reputation in the opera world for its Resident Artist Training Program, beautiful sets and costumes, and outstanding opera productions.

Tri-Cities Opera has been honored by the National Board of Directors of Opera America, has received the President’s Medal from Binghamton University, and has been awarded the prestigious New York State Council on the Arts Governor’s Award.

 

ED Position Description

The Executive Director is responsible for implementing TCO’s strategic plan and developing and maintaining external relationships with donors and community organizations.  As chief administrative and financial officer, the Executive Director is responsible for fiscal management, including drafting and monitoring the annual budget, working collaboratively with TCO’s Artistic and Production Directors, as well as managing other staff and all day-to-day operations.

TCO’s administrative and artistic staff includes Artistic Director and Director of Production, plus a full-time Company and Development manager, and a director of marketing and community relations. Other skilled support such as stage management, set and costume design, and so forth is contracted as needed.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Overall responsibility for the strategic plan, working closely with the Board of Directors and the Artistic Director;
  • Day-to-day operations and management of staff.
  • Facilities oversight and management
  • Financial oversight, including development and implementation of the annual budget, monitoring and control of expenses, processing payroll and payables;
  • Maximization of earned revenue;
  • Assisting with fund-raising strategies and community engagement;
  • Meeting fund-raising targets; planning and coordinating grant submissions;
  • Board development—supporting efforts to identify and cultivate new board members and enhance the participation of the current board;
  • Building TCO’s relevance to the community through its educational activities, expanding relationships with area schools and colleges; and increasing the diversity of the TCO’s audience and stakeholders;
  • Representing TCO at appropriate regional and national organizations;
  • Preparing the ED report to the board and attending board meetings.
  • Negotiate and administer the collective bargaining agreements held by TCO & various unions

 

Candidate Profile:

The Board of Directors is seeking someone who inspires enthusiasm, has a track record in fund-raising and audience development, and who is interested in growing a company over a number of years.

Training in opera/music and/or arts management is desirable. A good contact network throughout the opera industry would be useful. 

The ideal candidate will have at least three to five years of senior management experience in the not for profit field and have the ability to work well in collaboration with the company’s current artistic leadership and staff, as well as with community volunteers including the Board of Directors.

 

Other Position Requirements Include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in business / management.
  • Experience in arts-related fields / opera helpful
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point), QuickBooks a plus.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary is commensurate with experience.  Benefits include health insurance and dental coverage.
