Assistant Manager, WNO Corporate & Foundation Relations

The Assistant Manager works with the Manager of WNO Corporate & Foundation Relations to plan, develop, and implement the solicitation of corporate sponsorships, foundation and government grants, and government support—both restricted and unrestricted—for WNO’s artistic and educational programming, and annual special events. The Assistant Manager will oversee and generate work for the WNO Corporate & Foundation Relations Assistant and an intern, as appropriate.

The Assistant Manager will organize and execute solicitation campaigns, prospecting research and strategy, and fulfillment of donor benefits, working directly with donors and internal staff.

The Assistant Manager must have a demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and manage time and projects for maximum productivity, along with the ability to shift priorities in order to achieve high value work. The incumbent must customarily and regularly exercise proactivity, discretion, and independent judgment in the pursuit of job objectives and goals, often under significant pressure. A proactive working style and an eagerness to communicate and problem-solve with a positive attitude is essential.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • 35% — Identify, cultivate, and solicit current and prospective donors/sponsors, working with the Manager, Chief Development Officer, and WNO artistic staff. Maintain direct contact with current and prospective donors/sponsors via telephone, email, and personal visits.
  • 30% — Draft/edit proposals, final reports, solicitation letters and other written materials as needed. Includes the submission of budget and financial information.
  • 20% — Cultivate and steward sponsors via events/hospitality opportunities, donor recognition and ticketing, and other benefits as appropriate. Work directly with corporate contacts to fulfill benefits.
  • 15% — Oversee the Assistant(s) in processing gifts, drafting correspondence, and ensuring proper donor crediting on all materials related to events and season sponsorship.

  • N/A — Responds to the needs and requests of Kennedy Center management and staff in a professional and expedient manner.

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree is required. An advanced degree in a related field is beneficial.
  • Minimum 2 years of development of related experience required.
  • Working knowledge of the performing arts is preferred.
  • Minimum Skills and/or Knowledge Required
  • Careful attention to detail and awareness of standard accounting procedures.
  • Ability and confidence to work without close supervision, to foresee development needs, and to proactively generate work for this position as well as an Assistant and an intern.
  • A professional and cordial demeanor, tact, and diplomacy are imperative as the incumbent is regularly in contact with people at all levels of society and business including Kennedy Center leadership, high level volunteers, major donors and prospects, and other Center personnel.
  • A clear understanding of the Kennedy Center mission, and an understanding of the ways in which a fundraising operation works within a large and complex institution.
  • Creativity and an excellent command of the English language are critical to identifying funding sources, matching their interests to projects, and communicating persuasively, both in person and in writing, the need for funding.
  • Ability to deftly manage many relationships and personality types; both internally among staff members, and externally among constituents.
  • Experience with Tessitura is ideal.

 

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate in person and on the telephone. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel in order to operate computer keyboard, office equipment, and other essential tasks. The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, crouch, and reach with hands and arms. This position infrequently lifts, carries, or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
