Description: The Calling is a dramatic psychological portrait of Peggy, an escaped slaved, and her refusal to accept enslavement on a spiritual level. The opera takes place on board a ship bound from Philadelphia, where she has been captured, to South Carolina, where she will be returned to slavery. The work centers on Peggy's choice to drown her three children rather than allow them to become enslaved.
