The Goddess
Composer: Allen Shearer
Librettist: Allen Shearer
Premiere Date: Not available.
Description: A young Hindu woman lives with her husband's family. Her father-in-law dotes on her; she is the delight of his old age. In a dream he sees her as the goddess Kali, and on awakening declares her to be a divine incarnation. His son tries to dissuade him, yet while they are arguing the young woman appears to heal a child--"proof" of her incarnation. The son, constrained by Hindu precepts of filial obedience, fails in his attempt to wrest his wife from his father's domain. When another child falls ill--their nephew, whom she adores--the father-in-law insists on giving him to the "incarnation" to be healed. The child dies in her arms during the night. Driven mad, she throws herself in the river.
