Description: The Hanging Tree is based on a true story that occurred in the year 1897 in the towns of Versailles and Osgood, Indiana. Lizzie Lloyd returns to Ripley County to get revenge on Lyle Levi for crimes he committed againt her and her family during her youth. She uses her female wiles to convince the hapless Peter Hostetler that he should assist in seeing her plot to fruition. They enlist the services of the Grand Army of the Republic and other enraged community members who have also felt the pain of violence at the hands of Lyle Levi and his 60 member gang of thugs. Lizzie arranges for the sheriff and deputies to be waiting in the cellar of a store when Lyle's men attempt a robbery. Before the evening is over, Lyle and 4 of his men are in jail cells awaiting an unknown fate. It isn't long before 200 unknown citizens march on the streets of Versailles, break in the jail, club and shoot the prisoners, and drag their bodies to a tree near the cemetary. The show opens and closes with a Fall festival and much of the story is delivered by an eyewitness, William Bagot.
