Star Thoughts
Composer: Robert Ceely
Librettist: Elisabeth Gatineau
Premiere Date: Not available.
Description: Lucy, a rich widow, is influenced by "Doctor" Sam, a spiritual leader who is making plans to build, with Lucy's financial backing, a retirement home for spiritual seekers. These spiritual seekers are devotees of his organization, Unaria, which works to prepare the world for the arrival of an alien race. The Unaria Society, Doctor Sam, Lucy, Lucy's attendant Charlotte, and Charlotte's lover Peter, as well as Susan, a young woman who makes her living confessing her sins on televangelist shows and who claims to be both an alien abductee and Charlotte's lost daughter, gather at a sacred location in the desert to prepare a landing space and to perform their annual ritual of welcome for the alien starship they believe will soon arrive. Despite the warnings of Molly Begay, a native of the place, and of the skeptics Charlotte and Peter, the Society performs its sacred ritual which leads to mortal disaster in the view of some of the observers and to transfiguring spiritual affirmation in the view of others.
