Description: Going to help the cholera outbreak, Mother Magdalene does not have time to see the new carpenter, who says he can build the "impossible" staircase needed for the choirloft. When she returns, she finds the miraculous staircase has been built (they believe) by Saint Joseph. Only Manuela (a mute) is heartbroken because she could communicate with him and now he is gone. Miraculously she speaks his name, "Jose."
