Description: Presented at New York City Opera's Vox 2002, Showcasing American Composers, FLORIDA is a highly-stylized work that investigates the notion of seduction by focusing on Florida Fandango, a 16-year-old wrongly accused of matricide. When Florida's mother is murdered, the community suspects that Florida seduced her boyfriend into committing the crime. The Redwoods, her next-door neighbors, function as witnesses and jury from atop their redwood deck. The jury is ultimately unable to convict, but this failure is perceived as another act of seduction by the eponymous heroine—suspiciously over-endowed with vowels.

Musical Style: contemporary, with strong elements of modern jazz and music-theater. Vocal lines are often highly lyrical, but there are also many sections of rhythmic propulsion and melodic angularity.
