Alhambra Motel
Composer: Stephen Weinstock
Librettist: Jonathan Levi
Premiere Date: Not available.
Description: The opera opens in Granada, Spain on the night of August 2, 1492, a few hours before the expulsion of the Jews and Christopher Columbus's first great voyage across the Atlantic. Eight months have passed since the Alhambra, the great Red Fortress of the Moors, was captured by their Catholic Majesties, Ferdinand and Isabella. Southern Spain, which for five hundred years saw three great communities combine talents to compose poetry, build palaces, and navigate the stars, is about to unravel. Against this historical backdrop, Yosef, a young Jew, and his Catholic girlfriend Zaida are searching for a garden away from the world. Their search for a return to Eden takes them first to the Alhambra and then, five hundred years later, to the Alhambra Motel at the edge of the California desert. ALHAMBRA MOTEL explores a cultural mystery common to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. It is a mystery given in legend, in painting, and most especially in music—the Kol Nidre, the Te Deum, and early flamenco.
