Description: Prologue
After the overture the director steps before the curtain to announce that one half of his comedy team, which is scheduled to entertain before the main work of the evening, has not arrived. The curtains part to reveal a backstage area where Pierrot is frantically seeking his partner Pierrette. A soprano, Columbine, is heard vocalizing off stage. Pierrot convinces her to help out until Pierrette can be found.

Opera
The opera begins in an elegant dining hall where Columbine and Pierrot trade witticisms over their meal. They soon tire of this and when the director enters insisting that he will not wait to play his play, they leave. The director summons his players, a pair of shepherds. They play a game dividing the stage in half and try to trick each other into trespassing. Eventually they grow to mistrust each other so that they kill each other. Pierrot and Columbine return to find the two bodies. The director assures them that once they are hidden the audience will forget. They resume their meal repeating the music that began the opera.
