Description: America, 1906-13. Abigail Stone's mother ran off, and her father Elias (a minister) and grandmother Hanna raised her. Abby sings in her father's church. A visiting operatic star, Helen, offers to train Abby for opera. Elias forbids this. Elias catches Abby at a dance and angrily disowns her. Abby goes to live with Helen, becomes an opera star, and she and Helen become lovers. On her deathbed, Hanna asks Abby to promise to come home and care for Elias. Abby refuses and Hanna dies. Abby asks Elias if she can attend the funeral. Elias calls her a shameless degenerate. Abby vows she will live her life as she wants. Elias stabs her in anger, and then, repentant, stabs himself.
