Al-Phonsine (Il Traviato)
Composer: Vittorio Furgeri
Librettist: Vittorio Furgeri
Premiere Date: Not available.
Description: Al-Phonsine is a music-drama that depicts the events that occur during the last years in the life of a young, flamboyant homosexual who was one of the first AIDS victims. Al's infatuation with the operatic character Violetta in LA TRAVIATA (Alphonsine Duplessis, the Parisian courtesan who died of consumption in 1847) becomes more obsessive when he's struck by the similarity between his life and hers. Like her, he becomes seriously ill and at the same time becomes involved in a true love affair. As the drama evolves, La Traviata comes to life. She reveals to Al the seriousness of his illness, which will ultimately end his life. AL-PHONSINE is a drama about redemption and fatalism.
