Sredni Vashtar
Composer: Alastair Cassels-Brown
Librettist: Richard Adams
Premiere Date: Not available.
Description: A modern fairy tale: young Conradin's wicked guardian sets out to deprive him of everything worth living for, "for his own good." She takes away his harmonica, drags him away from flying his kite to go to church, and has his beloved pet killed. Conradin secretly gets a ferret named Sredni Vashtar, whom he asks to do one thing for him, though he never says what. The guardian goes to dispose of Conradin's "guinea pigs" and is killed by the ferret. The tale gives many opportunities for the music to express two emotions simultaneously.
