Hawaii Opera Theatre (HOT) invites applications and nominations for the position of Executive Director, a leader who will embrace the Company’s mission, share the Company’s core values, and guide the Company’s financial development and stability in the decade ahead. The position is vacant and available to the appropriate candidate. Hawaii Opera Theatre welcomes applications from candidates with relevant senior-level management experience from diverse backgrounds including the arts, public and private sectors.

The Organization

The mission of Hawaii Opera Theatre is to "use sound business practices to present a broad spectrum of world-class opera and music-theatre, as well as a wide range of educational and artistic opportunities to the whole State of Hawaii. ” Our goal is to help shape the future of opera and to connect diverse audiences through its power and beauty. To accomplish its mission, Hawaii Opera Theatre produces world-class opera and endeavors to build new audiences; educates and engages its community through several unique education programs and projects; develops and cultivates the finest opera artists of each generation. By doing so, Hawaii Opera Theatre strengthens the cultural and economic vitality of the State. Recent opera productions have included Carmen, Three Decembers, A Streetcar Named Desire, Siren Song, As One, Daughter of the Regiment, Eugene Onegin, Romeo et Juliet and a concert version of Rigoletto featuring Quinn Kelsey and Nadine Sierra.

The Role

The Executive Director is the chief executive officer of Hawaii Opera Theatre and reports to a 55 member Board of Directors. S/he provides the leadership and vision to 15 full time staff that ensure the financial, and organizational success of Hawaii Opera Theatre, while raising the Company’s profile and enhancing its reputation for excellence locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. S/he is the spokesperson, advocate, and visible representative of Hawaii Opera Theatre throughout Honolulu and Statewide. S/he takes an active part in the life of the community and ensures that Hawaii Opera Theatre embraces, engages, reflects, and celebrates the rich diversity of the Honolulu community. Hawaii Opera Theatre is seeking an experienced candidate who can demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities in all operational functions, including but not limited to financial management, fundraising, organizational and business development, marketing, communications, public relations and audience engagement.

Key Role Responsibilities

- General Management, Financial Oversight and Operations.

- Day to day operations of the organization.

- Management and development of administrative staff.

- Develops the annual budget in partnership with the Board.

- Financial management. Company turnover of $3.5 million in 2018.

- Legal compliance.

- Collaborate closely with Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Emmanuel Plasson and his artistic team and the Board of Directors on long-term strategic planning.

- Lead Hawaii Opera Theatre’s development initiatives (both corporate and individual giving). 

- Oversee Hawaii Opera Theatre’s marketing and sponsorship in partnership.


The successful candidate will display and must be able to demonstrate the following characteristics:

- Strong business acumen with at least 5 years experience as a CEO, CFO or General Director of a non-profit organization managing a multi-million dollar budget, experience in corporate governance, reporting, accounting and compliance.

- Diplomacy & tact; working in a demanding and creative environment.

- Collegiality and a willingness to closely collaborate with Hawaii Opera Theatre staff and Board of Directors in order to problem solve and reach goals.

- Interpersonal skills and leadership; experience in leading teams, and motivating colleagues. 

- Personal accountability; highest levels of personal integrity, and ability to work under pressure.

- Stakeholder focus; ability to manage and sustain relationships with funders, sponsors and partners.


Compensation is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
