Position:

HOT is looking for an experienced opera professional to serve as the rehearsal pianist for our main stage production of La Traviata, and to provide regular coachings and oversee musical preparation for our Young Artists and Studio singers in concerts and outreach programs throughout the period. Successful applicants will have a proven track record of working with young singers as well as with internationally-renowned professionals in a calm, collegial, and professional manner. S/he will bring a wealth of knowledge about repertoire and concert programing and will be willing to assist in the artistic endeavors of the company as needed. The candidate will need to collaborate with company staff members and work in a team-oriented environment.

Programs:

The Young Artist Program (YAP) is a new program at HOT in which we bring two singers (a tenor and a baritone) to Honolulu to serve in education outreach programs, school tours, and to cover and perform comprimario roles in our main stage productions. The Mae Z. Orvis Opera Studio is a resident program for young and more established singers who reside in Hawaii and are looking for coaching and performing opportunities.

Duties:

Main stage production

  • Serve as répétiteur for La Traviata. 
  • Serve as principal coach for soloist and chorus members in music and diction as needed.
  • Assist conductor by taking notes during orchestra rehearsals.

YAP and Studio programs

  • Coach program singers as arranged. Coach Young Artists in main stage and cover roles. Coach and mentor two emerging collaborative pianists.
  • Serve as pianist and coach for outreach concerts and other community or collaborative performances.
  • Schedule singers, assist with repertoire, and serve as pianist for guest artist masterclasses.
  • Assist HOT Education Department in school residency programs and touring production as needed.

Music staff

  • Assist Director of Artistic Administration in determining cuts for main stage production and securing necessary scores.
  • Other music staff assignments as needed. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 2 to 4 years of relevant experience working in a professional opera setting and with an established young artist program. 
  • Experience working collaboratively with a fulltime staff.
  • Master’s degree in collaborative piano or piano performance preferred.

Application:

  • Cover letter, detailed resume, 3 professional references.
  • At least 2 video clips of separate coaching sessions, one of which shows proficiency in Italian diction.
  • 1 video (preferred) or audio recording of a collaborative performance with a singer.
