Job Summary

Pittsburgh Opera seeks qualified applicants for the position of Annual Giving Associate. The Annual Giving Associate reports to the Manager of Individual Giving and is an integral member of the company’s development team.

The Annual Giving Associate is an annual fund gift officer responsible for managing a portfolio of donors and prospective donors to Pittsburgh Opera who each give up to $2,999 annually. The Annual Giving Associate will solicit, cultivate and close gifts to support the annual fund of Pittsburgh Opera and work with the Manager of Individual Giving to visit donors, coordinate and execute mail and e-mail appeals for annual fund support, conduct telemarketing campaigns, and monitor and analyze the effectiveness of those appeals.

The Annual Giving Associate will be responsible for donor recognition, sending gift acknowledgements and managing the donor benefits of Pittsburgh Opera’s giving societies and serve as the primary liaison for the Friends of Pittsburgh Opera.

Specific job responsibilities of the Annual Giving Associate:

  • Annual Individual Membership/Tele-funding Campaigns: Prepares, coordinates and executes the Opera’s efforts to secure gifts of less than $3,000 in support of Pittsburgh Opera’s fundraising goals, utilizing direct mail ,tele-funding appeals, online as well as phone and face-to-face contact. Identifies, cultivates and solicits renewal gifts, with special emphasis on upgrading current donors to higher levels of giving, recovering support from lapsed donors and acquiring new donors.
  • Manage Donor Benefits: Communicates benefits to individual donors; staffs donor recognition events; and prepares donor listings.
  • Prospect Management and Research: Identifies and researches prospects and prospect lists from the Opera’s database for qualification as potential donors. Evaluates donor capacity and inclination to give to Pittsburgh Opera. Records relevant information from donor contacts and interactions in the database and designates potential donors for cultivation and solicitation actions and, under the direction of the Manager of Individual Giving, executes those strategies.
  • Other: Contributes to short- and long-term departmental planning and evaluation. Welcomes guests to opera performances at the Benedum Center, CAPA Theatre and other events and programs at the opera headquarters in the Strip District.


  • Bachelor’s degree; two or more years’ experience in nonprofit fundraising with a preference for work in individual annual fund giving; proficiency in donor/customer relationship management software, preferably Tessitura, and the components of Microsoft Office; ability to manage multiple tasks independently and to thrive in an open office environment; superior written and oral communication, organization and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated success in securing gifts and experience in a comprehensive fundraising program.
  • Experience with computer software for data analysis (particularly Tessitura) proposal/presentation creation and project management;
  • Has a car and a valid drivers’ license.
  • Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends, as needed.
