Assistant Stage Manager

Job Title:              Assistant Stage Manager (1st, 2nd, and 3rd)

Department:        Production

Reports To:         Production Stage Manager

Classification:     Non-Exempt


The Assistant Stage Manager supervises all stage management activities and personnel while coordinating and affecting all company production stage events.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintains inventory of all stage management items
  • Gathers and maintains daily show records
  • Processes all stage management rehearsal room and on stage activity
  • Monitors, attends and runs lighting sessions, technical sessions, rehearsals and performances
  • Orders supplies as necessary
  • Tapes scenery details on floor of rehearsal rooms
  • Prepares rehearsal room for all rehearsals
  • Assists Production Stage Manager in creating the technical master document for each production
  • Assists Production Stage Manager in preparing a score with tabs, rehearsal numbers, timings, cues, cuts, etc.
  • Maintains a safe environment for artists and staff in rehearsal room, on stage and in other areas
  • Assists Production Stage Manager in writing and distributing daily rehearsal and performance notes
  • Assists Production Stage Manager in creating and distributing crew paperwork
  • Supervises chorus, artists, orchestra, crew, personnel as necessary to successfully present each production
  • Oversees dressing rooms and dressing room assignments
  • Oversees cleanliness of all rehearsal and performance spaces
  • Performs other duties as assigned


Other Duties

Provides administrative support for Production Stage Manager and Technical Department as needed.


Essential Job Requirements

Various levels of experience will determine the position offered. Minimum experience: Bachelor of Arts degree in theatre and one year experience as a stage manager, or two years’ experience as a stage manager.  Must read music fluently.  PC proficiency and spreadsheet applications experience – Word and Excel preferred.  Previous opera experience a plus. Available for evening and weekend work.

Candidate must have excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills and be able to manage multiple tasks and projects.  Must be a team player.  Requires strong verbal/written communication.  Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to speak smoothly and cohesively in front of an audience, as well as, tactful; knowing how to behave and respond in delicate or difficult situations. Knowledge of, or familiarity with technical, wardrobe, lighting, wig and make-up areas in opera beneficial. Ability to read and speak additional languages is a plus.
