Founded in 1984, Opera San José is a $4.5M budget house located in the Bay Area of California. Currently producing four mainstage operas and numerous civic and education engagement programs annually, Opera San José is committed to incubating talent and innovation across the field. In the coming seasons, company priorities will focusing on the advancement of the art form and industry through several key areas: the cultivation of the next generation of musicians, artists, craftspeople and entrepreneurs; the creation of innovative artistic projects, both on and off the mainstage; and the development of best business practices that will re-examine the industry’s current conception of funding solutions, community engagement, civic practice, community partnerships and audience growth.

Reporting to the General Director/CEO and working in close collaboration with the Music Director, the Director of Artistic and Music Administration is a vital member of the producing team of Opera San José. This position serves a strategic partner to the executive team in the expansion of the company’s residency program and innovation initiatives as the operatic art incubator in Silicon Valley.

This position will serve as a key point person for artists and musicians and manages the Artistic and Music Coordinator, as well as oversees the principal artists in residence, guest artists, chorus, dancers, supernumeraries, and supertitle operators. This position’s primary duties will include spearheading casting for the company, and will be responsible for artist recruitment, negotiations, artistic and music budget management, interdepartmental communication, audition strategy and industry interface. S/he will serve as a liaison to creative teams, city contacts, artist managers and senior staff and collaborate cross-departmentally on key strategic initiatives that will include civic and audience engagement activities.

Working in collaboration with the General Director and Music Director, the position will serve on the outseason planning team and will provide input into the creation of the rehearsal schedule and annual orchestra call schedule. The Director of Artistic and Music Administration will oversee the daily operations of both departments and will attend necessary rehearsals, sitzprobes, serving performance duty as needed.
