General Director

Position: General Director, reporting to the Board of Directors  Location: Charlottesville, Virginia; the General Director will be expected to reside in the Charlottesville area  
Type/FLSA: Full Time - Exempt
Compensation: Commensurate with experience

The Opportunity:
The General Director will commence work on or before July 1, 2020, and will partner with the Board of Directors to develop and execute an artistic vision and long-term fiscally responsible operational strategy for the Charlottesville Opera (CO). The successful applicant will have responsibility for all artistic, business and administrative activities of the company.

Key Responsibilities:

The General Director will have responsibility for and oversight of all aspects of the company’s operations including:

• Artistic Operations, including Programming and Production Management

• Financial Management, including budgeting and expense control

• Fundraising, including individuals, corporations, foundations and special events

• General Administration, including staff hiring and management

• Marketing and Public Relations

• Education and Community Outreach


 Selection Criteria:

• Senior management experience in opera/musical theater strongly preferred

• Strong interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to effectively gain the

  respect and support of various stakeholders, including Board members, donors,

  volunteers, and community members required

• Exceptional written, oral, presentation, and organizational skill required.

• Proven ability to work independently, meet deadlines, multi-task, adapt to change,     

  be creative, and problem-solve

• Extensive knowledge of fund-raising “best practices,” principles, and ethics.

• Minimum of five years personally designing and executing successful fundraising   

  campaigns required

• Minimum of five years’ successful financial and personnel management experience

(preferably with a non-profit organization) required

• Expertise working with DonorPerfect and/or other fundraising databases required

• Facility with QuickBooks accounting software required.

• Advanced degree preferred


The Company:

For 42 years, Charlottesville Opera has produced opera, musical theatre, and other musical performances.  Originally performing at Ash-Lawn-Highland--the home of President James Monroe--in 2009, the season was moved to the award-winning historic Paramount Theatre (seating capacity 1041) on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall.  In 2017, the company changed its name from Ash Lawn Opera to Charlottesville Opera. 

Charlottesville Opera produces an annual summer season of two productions (one opera, one musical) as well as occasional winter and spring performances, bringing in more than 100 singers, orchestral musicians, directors, designers, and technical staff.  The annual budget is approximately $750,000.

The city of Charlottesville, located in west central Virginia, approximately 100 miles southwest of Washington, DC and 70 miles northwest of Richmond, Virginia.  Known for its architectural and historical significance and natural beauty, Charlottesville is home to the University of Virginia and Thomas Jefferson’s house Monticello, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. 

Downtown Charlottesville features one of the longest outdoor pedestrian malls in the United State with stores, restaurants, and civic attractions.  The city hosts world-class entertainment such as Charlottesville Opera and has an active highly regarded arts and theater community.
