Costume Coordinator/Shop Supervisor

The College of Music at CU Boulder encourages applications for a Costume Coordinator/Shop Manager! This role is responsible for creating and/or acquiring costumes and wigs for two to three fully-realized Eklund Opera Program productions and two fully-realized Musical Theatre productions per academic year. In addition, this individual pulls from stock and fits costumes for one CU New Opera Workshop (CU NOW) summer program, one Composer Fellows’ Initiative (CFI) summer program and one Opera Scenes program annually.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 
 Costume and Wig Design and/or Acquisition
  • Design costumes for Musical Theatre, CU NOW, CFI, and Opera Scenes
  • May be called upon to design costumes for Eklund Opera Program depending on the needs of the production and limitations of the costume rental package
  • Assist with hiring of designers for costumes and/or wigs as needed, and collaborate with contracted designers
  • Locate and facilitate rental of costumes from costume houses and/or local sources
  • Build new costumes when rentals are unavailable
  • Production research and the creation of costume sketches when designing
  • Costume fittings and alterations
  • Hiring and supervision of stitchers, wig master, and make-up artists as needed
  • Maintenance and clean-up of costume shop, costume stock and storage
Production Meetings and Run of Show
  • Attend production meetings, photo shoots, dress rehearsals, and all performances
  • Supervise and participate in wardrobe activities including costumes, wigs, and make-up application
  • Work with stage management to coordinate dressing rooms and running of costumes, wigs and make-up application
Administrative
  • Responsible for hiring and supervising student assistants as needed
  • Assist with the development of a budget for costumes, wigs, and props and oversee spending within the approved budget

WHAT WE REQUIRE

  • At least 3 years of experience managing a costume shop and supervising at least 2 employees
  • BA/BFA degree or higher in Theatre, Music or a related field
    • Note: An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the required degree on a year-for-year basis

WHAT YOU NEED

  • Ability to work with artists and designers, anticipating the needs of each while balancing the workroom’s ability to complete the work on schedule
  • Knowledge of safety protocol for costume related equipment, products, tools, and their implementation
  • Excellent interpersonal, organization, problem solving and management skills
  • Emotionally mature with the flexibility and sensitivity to collaborate with diverse personalities and situations
  • Knowledge of music theatre, opera literature and tradition
  • Knowledge of costume history, costume design, costume construction techniques, and fabric
  • Knowledge of draping, cutting constructing, fitting and alteration
  • Budgetary experience and a proven track record of bringing projects in on-time and on-budget
  • Knowledge of basic sewing machine repair and maintenance
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel and Calendar

WHAT WE WOULD LIKE YOU TO HAVE

  • 5 or more years of experience in managing a costume shop
  • Our ideal candidate will have established relationships with designers
