ARIZONA OPERA ASSISTANT LIGHTING DESIGNER 2020-21 SEASON

Arizona Opera was founded in 1971. Since its inaugural year, Arizona Opera has produced over 170 fully-staged operas and concerts. On stage, Arizona Opera presents artists of both international stature and emerging talent, and each season balances debut artists and the return of favorite performers.

Arizona Opera seeks an experienced Assistant Lighting Designer (ALD) for the 2020/21 Season.  The AZO Season consists of two series.  The Red Series consists of two operas at The Herberger Theater Center in Phoenix (3 Perfs) and The Alice Holsclaw Theatre in Tucson (2 Pers). The MainStage Series consists of three operas at Symphony Hall in Phoenix (3 Perfs) and The Music Hall in Tucson (2 Perfs).

26 October 2020 through 11 April 2021.  All operas tech in Phoenix.

El Milagro del Recuerdo** Production & Performance: 26 October – 15 November 2020 (LD: Ken Billington)

Carmen* Production & Performance: 11 January – 31 January 2021 (LD: Gregory Allen Hirsch)

A Streetcar Named Desire Production & Performance: 15 February – 7 March 2021 (LD: Driscoll Otto)

Elixir of Love Production & Performance: 22 March – 11 April 2021 (LD: Gregory Allen Hirsch)

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create, draft and update lighting paperwork as needed including all hookups, schedules, focus charts, cue lists, follow spot cue lists, etc.
  • Focus under the direction of the Lighting Designer
  • Adapt and focus shows in Tucson performance venues
  • Attend rehearsals as needed, and all performances
  • Conduct channel checks
  • Coordinate all aspects of the electrics department including prep, load-in, focus, techs, dress rehearsals, performances, and load-in/out in collaboration with the Technical Director
  • Serve as the primary contact for all Visiting Lighting Designers.
  • Provide effective communication between the lighting designer and all departments.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BFA in stage design or technology with an emphasis on lighting.
  • Knowledge of opera production standards
  • Ability to read music
  • Proficiency in Vectorworks2020, Lightwright 6, Lightning Tapes and Microsoft Office.
  • Proficiency with ETC consoles and off-line software.
  • Experience working with IATSE labor.  
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills (English).
  • Good organizational and time management skills.

COMPENSATION

Fee per show is commensurate with experience.
