About Sarasota Opera 

Sarasota Opera, which owns its 1926 historic theater, produces four operas in repertory from January to March, in addition to one opera and a Youth Opera production in the fall. Additionally, throughout the opera season, Sarasota Opera offers special events and concerts.  

Position Summary

The Wig and Make up Designer is a seasonal independent contractor who is responsible for styling and construction of wigs and facial hair, designing and supervising show makeup, and overseeing styling of actor's own hair, for Sarasota Opera’s 2020-21 season. The season encompasses five mainstage opera productions, as well as a mainstage Youth Opera production.  The Wig and Makeup Designer is responsible for organizing the wig and makeup shop, supervising wig and makeup staff and maintaining the artistic integrity of each production.

Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Design all wig and makeup elements within the artistic aesthetic of the Sarasota Opera    established by the Artistic Director
  • Supervise the build, rental, purchase, and maintenance of all wigs and facial hair 
  • Theatrical makeup and wig application for all singers
  • Conduct all wig/ hair fittings
  • Attend all designer runs, photo calls, and dress rehearsals 
  • Participation in scheduling wig and makeup staff and assigning show call times 
  • Facilitating the cleaning and maintenance of all wig and makeup equipment

Position Requirements    

The successful candidate will possess the following knowledge and skills

  • At least 5 years of experience in theatrical wig and makeup design
  • Proficiency in theatrical makeup application 
  • Knowledge of Opera style makeup application, and period hair styling
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Ability to work in a demanding repertory environment  

Additional Required Knowledge and Skills   

Have a good understanding of Microsoft Office, and excellent communication skills. Opera experience is REQUIRED, repertory experience is preferred. 

Dates-

Fall Season: Oct. 11th to Nov. 17th, 2020

Winter Season: Jan. 10th to Mar. 23rd, 2021

This is a seasonal independent contractor position; the ideal candidate would be available for both fall and winter seasons.  The rate of pay is based on previous experience. Company housing and travel provided.
