Community Opera Fellowship Manager

Opera Omaha invites applications and nominations for the position of Community Opera Fellowship Manager available immediately.


The Community Opera Fellowship Manager is responsible for the implementation, management, supervision, coordination, and evaluation of the program for the Holland Community Opera Fellowship (operaomaha.org/community/holland-community-fellowship). They will report to the Director of Engagement Programs.


The Opportunity

The Community Opera Fellowship Manager will join Opera Omaha at a critical time in the Company’s history, building on a radical program that redefines how an opera company serves its community(ies). Launched in 2017 with long-term funding from the Holland Foundation and partial support from an OPERA America Innovation Grant, the Holland Community Opera Fellowship leads the field in civic practice - building deep relationships outside of the performance venues.  These relationships and the programs co-created with our partners have proven to be our strengths in these difficult times.  Four Holland Community Fellows are engaged each season to bring their skills as performing artists and trained civic practitioners in service to individual creative growth within partner organizations, through a combination of long- and short-term co-created programs.


The Position

The Community Opera Fellowship Manager is responsible for connecting and fostering the connections between Community Partners, Holland Community Opera Fellows, Community Panel members.

  • Establish team goals, strategies, working guidelines, and continuous improvement of program infrastructure with Director of Engagement Programs and Community Artist Panel.
  • Develop and manage program content and implementation strategy with Director of Engagement Programs, Head of Music, and Community Opera Fellows.
  • Conduct and administer the budget planning, expenditure tracking and other administrative tasks with the Director of Engagement Programs.
  • With the Director of Engagement Programs develop and implement systems for both quantitative and qualitative assessment and evaluation of the Community Opera Fellowship, and related programs, to be used for formal reporting in funding and PR materials and strategic planning for the company.
  • Promote the values of the Fellowship throughout the company.


The Community Opera Fellowship Manager directly supervises, manages and coaches the Holland Community Opera Fellows.

  • Foster positive team dynamics and communication amongst Fellowship team.
  • Manage workload/schedule capacity for Community Opera Fellows; assess and revise structure on an ongoing basis.
  • Develop systems to support Fellows in their work and encourage equity and balance.
  • With Director of Engagement Programming design and manage on-going training for the Community Opera Fellows, including identifying learning opportunities and individualized training needs.
  • Manage and facilitate the application and selection process for Community Opera Fellows.



The Community Opera Fellowship Manager serves as the principal contact for the Community Panel.

  • Lead meaningful conversations with the Community Panel about high level strategic decisions and priorities, helping set the direction of the Fellowship.
  • Schedule, develop agenda, prepare materials, and distribute meeting notes and minutes for Community Panel meetings.
  • Identify and recruit members of the Community Panel with Director of Engagement Programs.
  • Communicate with individual panel members between meetings.


The Community Opera Fellowship Manager builds and deepens relationships with existing and potential community partners in line with Fellowship goals across neighborhoods and sectors.

  • Lead meaningful conversations with community members and/or institutions to discuss or identify community issues and areas of need.
  • Serve as the primary contact for community partners.
  • Identify and assess community partner goals and needs, establish expectations, and facilitate program implementation to help partners meet those goals.
  • Identify and attend community events and partners activities, sharing with Fellowship team and other Opera Omaha staff as appropriate.

To succeed in this position, the Community Opera Fellowship Manager will bring experience in managing a team, experience working with community program development and demonstrated cross cultural life experience and competency, demonstrated interest in and commitment to community and a proactive growth mindset.

  • Solid computer skills in a Microsoft Office environment

Professional experience may be considered in lieu of an academic degree.  A Bachelor’s Degree in non-profit, social services or human services is preferred.


Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and may be subject to background checks as required by community partner organization policies.  



Compensation is in the mid 40’s and includes benefits as a full-time, exempt employee.

Opera Omaha, the only professional opera company in Nebraska, began in 1958 as the Omaha Civic Opera Society, a volunteer association. The Fellowship engages in meaningful dialogue with the community on issues and ideas of social relevance, fulfills unmet needs in the community for arts experiences, education, and appreciation, empowers communities through music and culture, creates reciprocal relationships between Opera Omaha and different sectors and neighborhoods benefitting residents and communities, expands Opera Omaha’s civic impact and relevancy to the community, and diversifies and grows Opera Omaha’s impact through performance and social interactions.

The HCOF Community Panel represents a cross-section of the community including organizations, businesses, neighborhoods, and community groups. Those serving on the Community Panel develop a partnership with Opera Omaha to engage in meaningful conversations to identify community issues and program development and potential partners and opportunities across different neighborhoods and sectors. The panel considers high level strategic decisions and priorities, helping set the direction of the Fellowship and is a critical part of the Fellow selection process, With the panel, residents from neighborhoods across the greater Omaha metro area have a voice in choosing who and how artists interact with their diverse districts and constituent groups.
