Technical Supervisor

Virginia Opera (VO), located in Norfolk, VA, invites applications for the position of Technical Supervisor. Virginia Opera produces four Mainstage productions in three distinct markets throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Position begins January 2021 and ends May 2021.

The Technical Supervisor reports to the Production Manager (PM).

The Technical Supervisor assists the Production Manager in execution of proper and safe scenic operations, be it a rental or in-house built set.  Along with Production Manager, Technical Supervisor oversees the smooth running of the technical department, spaces, and staff.

 Tech Supervisor oversees all aspects of scenery construction, refurbishment, stage operations, and the state-wide touring of four large-scale productions.  The Technical Supervisor also maintains the safety standards for the organization, oversees all technical aspects of scenery rentals and provides support to various state-wide events.

Other duties (but not limited to):

Create CAD drawings of VO productions for all VO venues.

Oversee tool inventory, theatre supplies

Maintain a Safe Working environment

Administer and track Workman’s comp paperwork

Oversee First-aid inventory, in conjunction with Facilities Manager

Administer time keeping & payroll.

Oversee and control scenery budget

Assist with staffing of work calls.

Assist with stage hand hiring

Oversee the technical crew from load-in to load-out in all venues and on tour.

Support other Departments with in-house and state-wide events.

Oversee the technical aspects of rental scenery.

 

The successful candidate will have a BA or BFA and 3-5 years professional theater or opera experience, which include the knowledge of theatre safety, all areas of stage operations and production, and both union and non-union personnel management.  Strong skills in budgeting, Vectorworks and shop maintenance, along with a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive trucks up to 20’ is required.  Strong communication and the ability to multi-task is a plus.
