Nigredo Hotel
Composer:Nic Gotham
Librettist:Ann-Marie MacDonald
Synopsis
Synopsis: A brain surgeon, Raymond, arrives at a decrepit hotel run by the crazed Sophie, who seems to know a great deal about him. In Room 7, Raymond explores the dark recesses of his mind, coming to terms with his loveless childhood. [The term "nigredo" signifies "dark night of the soul." It comes from a Jungian psychological model for personal development, based on Jung's studies of alchemy. Usually triggered by a traumatic experience, the state of "nigredo" refers to that period of despair that is an integral part of the human condition and a prerequisite to enlightenment. In the Jungian model, the next stage experienced is the moment of enlightenment or "albedo," a flash of insight that arises out of the "nigredo" experience and is its exact opposite. The third stage, "rubedo" or "red," represents the integration of the knowledge attained through the nigredo and "albedo" into daily living.]
