Bed and Sofa
Composer:Polly Pen
Librettist:Laurence Klavan
Synopsis
Bed and Sofa is a dramatic, comic, and romantic triangle. Ludmilla, a put-upon housewife, lives with Nikolai, her cheerfully despotic husband, in a cramped Moscow apartment. When Nikolai's comrade from the Civil War, Volodya, arrives to work as a printer but can find no lodging, Nikolai offers him the sofa in their apartment. While Nikolai is out of town, Ludmilla and Volodya become lovers. When Nikolai discovers this, he leaves, but is forced to return when he cannot find housing. The three live together until Ludmilla discovers she is pregnant, which precipitates an ironic resolution of the housing situation.
