Minutes Til Midnight
Composer:Robert Ward
Librettist:Daniel Lang
Synopsis
An American scientist, Emil Roszak, discovers the ultimate power of cosmic energy. He is summoned to the White House, where he is to produce a "cosmic bomb," which the government wants as a bargaining tool in its confrontation with the "enemy." As Roszak returns to his laboratory to complete the formula, a series of events – a heart attack, the death of Chris, his young protégé, in an anti-war demonstration, and visions of the bomb's holocaust---arouse Roszak's conscience. Roszak then decides that people everywhere must decide their own fate and publishes the formula in the International Physicists Journal in expectation of "a better tomorrow."
