Castor and Patience
Composer:Gregory Spears
Librettist:Tracy K Smith
Synopsis

In the aftermath of the 2008 financial collapse, a historic family property falls into the hands of two cousins.

Patience is fighting to stave off overzealous developers. Castor has a ballooning mortgage to contend with and is hoping to sell his share of the land. But if they’re going to get anywhere as a family, they must first learn to see past their differing allegiances and trust one another. Castor and Patience is the story not just of a single family or even a particular geography, but of America’s warring tensions between reckoning with the hard facts of history and racing blindly forward toward the dream of progress.

Cincinnati Opera is proud to present the world premiere of this poignant new opera by some of today's preeminent artistic voices, including Pulitzer Prize-winning U.S. Poet Laureate Tracy K. Smith and composer Gregory Spears. Spears is best known for his opera Fellow Travelers, which premiered at Cincinnati Opera in 2016 and was called "one of the most accomplished new American operas" (Chicago Tribune). This first-class creative team was commissioned in celebration of Cincinnati Opera's 100th anniversary season.
