Workshop/Reading: Zorro Workshop Presentation

Web Address: http://www.operacultura.org/calendar/Zorro-Workshop_2019
Start Time: 7:00PM

Join us for the first workshop performance of Zorro, a new opera by Héctor Armienta. Opera Cultura will give a special performance of excerpts of the opera, which based on the beloved fictional character Zorro. The performance will be followed by a brief discussion with the composer, artists, and stage director.

THE STORY

It is the story of a young man of noble birth in search of his destiny. After spending several years abroad in Spain, he returns home to Reina de Los Angeles to discover his true calling—to fight for the poor and disenfranchised. The story incorporates California history and is set during the politically tumultuous period of the early 1800’s in Alta California and in México. During that time, there was great politically upheaval in Spain and México, due in part to the French Revolution and Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. There are several references to political events and historical figures in the opera, including Spanish King Ferdinand and the man who lit the flame of the Mexican revolution, Padre Miguel Hidalgo.

The work is being commissioned by Forth Worth Opera and has received development support from Opera Cultura and Forth Worth Opera. The world premiere will be produced by Forth Worth Opera in Spring 2020.
