Meet the Composer: Kamala Sankaram

Kamala Sankaram discusses her multidisciplinary approach to composing and teaming up for her second opera with librettist Jerre Dye to create an engrossing tale exploring the controversial world of religious snake-handling.

Taking Up Serpents earned Washington National Opera a 2018 Commissioning Grant. The grant was awarded through OPERA America’s Opera Grants for Female Composers program, which is funded by the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation. Since its inception in 2013, the program has awarded over $1 million to support the development of operas by women.
