Cybersecurity: Current Threats and Preventions

Cybersecurity expert Heather Hughes discussed recent cyberattacks, including ransomware, business email compromises, and how threat actors gain and maintain access to your systems. This webinar covered the costs of a cyberattack and whether or not to pay ransom demands; proactive measures that can reduce the risk of a cyberattack; and how individuals' behaviors affect entire organizations when it comes to cybersecurity. Hughes also discussed the cyber insurance market and the new minimum cybersecurity controls that are required to obtain or renew cyber insurance.

Heather Hughes, J.D. HCISPP, CHPC, is a vice president for Stroz Friedberg’s Houston office, where she leads a wide variety of engagements, including data breach/incident response matters, complex digital forensics investigations, proactive security risk assessments, and cyber due diligence investigations. Hughes has over 25 years’ experience in privacy and data security, and since joining Stroz Friedberg in 2018, she has led and managed some of the firm's most complex incident response engagements, including the largest healthcare ransomware event in U.S. history, which was perpetrated by threat actors during the COVID pandemic. Hughes has also managed the ransomware response engagements involving the shutdown of operations of a national food supplier, manufacturing plant, and several energy producers.She regularly works with outside counsel to assist clients with regulatory inquiries as a result of the theft of data by organized cyber criminals.
