Utah Symphony | Utah Opera (USUO) connects Utah communities through great live music, serving as the premier provider of the orchestral and operatic art forms in the Intermountain West. The Utah Symphony, which performs at Salt Lake City’s Abravanel Hall and is led by Music Director Thierry Fischer, is one of the most engaged orchestras in the nation. JOB OVERVIEW:

Under the supervision of the Costume Director, the Assistant Tailor provides support for the highly-reputed USUO Costume Department. This individual will bring an advanced knowledge of all aspects of costume construction and bespoke tailoring to executing technical, hands-on creation under the guidance of the Tailor.  The areas of work are twofold: costume alteration and construction plus project supervision. Our ideal teammate in this role will be as comfortable setting up alterations, cutting new costume pieces, and stitching/construction as they are at assisting Costume Department members with large-scale project workflow. At times, this person may assist or oversee both full- and part-time staff and should be professionally suited to interact with guest designers, contractors, or other third-party contacts. We expect the individual to excel at assisting in organizational projects, to provide creative and collaborative guidance/suggestions for the Costume Department and the entire Opera Artistic team with the Costume Director, and to be an excellent and patient instructor with blossoming costume staff members.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Assist Tailor and occasionally Cutter/Draper in the patterning, construction, and alteration of costumes.

  • Assist in the preparation of stock / rental costumes for use in a production.

  • Execute stitching, cutting, pattern making, and setups responsibilities as directed.

  • Supervise garment construction, alteration, and finishing work.

  • Specialty construction as directed by Costume Director, Tailor, Cutter/Draper, Crafts Artisan.

  • Assist in fittings as needed.

  • Organize and distribute information relating to costumes between Tailor, Cutter/Draper, Stitchers, Designer, and Costume Department.

  • Gain familiarity of mainstage shows by attending room runs and tech rehearsals.

  • Assist in managing mainstage load in / load out for assigned shows.

  • See to repairs / costume needs on assigned mainstage shows (rehearsals and performances).

  • Assist with the day-to-day maintenance and cleanliness of costume workspaces and equipment.

  • Help maintain a safe, clean, and organized workplace.

  • Related duties as assigned by Costume Director.

  • Occasional nights and weekends required.

DESIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in theatrical or comparable costume construction, alteration, fitting with an emphasis on bespoke tailoring.

  • Knowledge and expertise in costume techniques and materials.

  • Ability to work within a team and skillfully delegate work.

  • Ability to organize work and time to meet deadlines.

  • Advanced hand and machine stitching skills.

  • Experience teaching stitching techniques a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to remain stationary for long periods of time.

  • Ability to manually work safely with Costume Department equipment.

  • Ability to occasionally move rolling clothing racks weighing up to 200 pounds.

  • Ability to twist, bend, reach, kneel, and lift up to 50 pounds.

  • Ability to drive to designated areas for work purposes.

Pay Range: $23 - $27 Hourly
