Assistant Costume Shop Manager


DESCRIPTION

Arizona Opera is looking to add the position of Assistant Costume Shop Manager to its full-time team. This role reports directly to the Costume Shop Manager and is integral to overseeing, forecasting, and maintaining both administrative and daily tasks within the Costume Shop. This position is crucial for ensuring a timely and smooth workflow, supporting the Costume Shop Manager in all aspects of shop operation. Ideal candidates will demonstrate artistic vision, adaptability, patience, and the ability to excel in a detail-oriented environment.

Arizona Opera is one of the few opera companies in the United States that performs in more than one city and venue. Rehearsals, tech, and opening performances of our main stage productions take place in Phoenix. Following the Phoenix performances, the production travels to Tucson, Arizona, where it receives its closing performance.

Engagement

Starting as soon as possible, with flexible start conditions negotiable.

This position is a full-time, exempt, hourly position paid semi-monthly as part of our regular employee pay structure. All overtime is paid at 1.5 times the hourly rate for the employee. A generous health benefit package is included, as well as paid vacation, paid sick leave and bonus time-off as per the employee handbook.

Qualifications

·         Degree in theatre/fashion technology or non-profit administration and at least two years of professional Costume Shop or non-profit experience with more than two years of production administrative experience as a plus or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.

·         Willingness to adhere to Arizona Opera’s production standards and safety policies.

·         Accomplished in fundamental computer skills, especially Microsoft 365, is required.

·         Strong communication, organizational, multi-tasking, and time management skills are a must.

·         Reliable transportation to get to and from the various venues, including travel down to Tucson.

Expectations

·         Provide administrative support to ensure efficient operation of the costume shop and the production team at large.

·         Assist with internal production document creation including, but not limited to, costume piece lists, wardrobe plots, running paperwork, invoices, budget tracking and more as well as its implementation.

·         Work closely with the Costume Shop Manager on all outgoing rentals, including but not limited to: pulling all necessary costume pieces, generating and updating rental paperwork, assembling rental books to be sent with packages, photographing and inventorying pieces, and helping monitor the location and status of costume packages and pieces.

·         Aid in scheduling of shop staff, overhire, and performer fittings.

·         Expected to correspond professionally with outside vendors and cultivate those relationships.

·         Support in receiving and processing the measurements of incoming performers.

·         Collaborate closely with the Costume Shop Manager to foresee shop and staff needs.

·         Participate and take notes for all fittings.

·         Lead Costume Shop Meetings if Costume Shop Manager is unable.

·         Participate in general costume shop activities including but not limited to assisting with strike, pulling/restocking costume pieces in the warehouse, organizing and inventorying shop supplies, and cleaning and restocking fitting rooms after fittings.

Physical Demands and Work Conditions

·         General office, costume shop, and backstage environment.

·         Non-temperature-controlled warehouse.

·         Extended periods standing at a cutting table and/or sitting at a sewing machine.

·         Ability to perform duties within a rigorous schedule when necessary.

·         Capable of climbing ladders and stepstools.

·         Ability to continuously lift heavy costumes during load-in, load-out, and performances.

·         When not in tech or performance weeks, 8 hour days, Monday - Friday

·         When in tech and performance weeks, evenings and weekends may be required

·         Travel to Tucson, AZ may be necessary  

Accommodations and Travel:

For work or travel outside of the office, employees are entitled to the following per the Employee Handbook:

·         will receive a travel allowance from Phoenix to Tucson.

·         will receive a per-diem allowance when in Tucson.

Parking is provided at all locations and venues.

BENEFITS

Pay Range: $18 - $20 Hourly

Full-time, year-round, continuing.

Non-Exempt, 1.5x overtime rate after 8 regular hours a day, 40 regular hours a week
