Kudos: Summer 2022

At the 2022 Grammy Awards, the Metropolitan Opera’s recording of Philip Glass’ Akhnaten won Best Opera Recording. Composer Caroline Shaw’s song cycle Narrow Sea was named Best Contemporary Classical Composition. The award for Best Classical Solo Vocal Album went to Mythologies, featuring works by Danaë Xanthe Vlasse performed by sopranos Hila Plitmann and Sangeeta Kaur.

San Francisco Opera’s video portrait series In Song, produced with Lumahai Productions, won the 2022 Webby People’s Voice Award in the category of Music Video Series and Channels. The Webby Awards honor excellence on the internet.

Angel Blue

Soprano Angel Blue was named the 2022 recipient of the Richard Tucker Award, which is given annually to an artist poised for a major international career and comes with a $50,000 prize.

Los Angeles Opera announced that the 2022 recipients of the Eva and Marc Stern Artist Award are tenor Ben Bliss, mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges, and soprano Liv Redpath. The $60,000 award, to be split among the three recipients, recognizes artists for their profound contributions to the company.

Will Liverman

Baritone Will Liverman won the Metropolitan Opera’s 2022 Beverly Sills Artist Award, a $50,000 prize that recognizes an extraordinarily gifted singer who has a rising Met career.

Ramón Tebar

Ramón Tebar, artistic director of Opera Naples, was recognized as a cultural ambassador by the Naples City Council and Naples Mayor Teresa Heitmann, who presented Tebar with an official proclamation and a key to the city.

Anthony Roth Costanzo

The New-York Historical Society announced that countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo will receive its 2022 History Makers Award at a gala this fall. The award recognizes Costanzo’s achievements in the performing arts and activism.

The winners of the Metropolitan Opera’s 2022 Eric and Dominque Laffont Competition are bass-baritone Le Bu, tenor Matthew Cairns, soprano Alexandra Razskazoff, soprano Julie Roset, mezzo-soprano Anne Marie Stanley, and soprano Esther Tonea. Each winner receives a cash prize of $20,000.

Baritone Alex DeSocio won the first prize of $10,000 at Opera Columbus’ 2022 Cooper-Bing Competition. Tenors Aaron Crouch and WooYoung Yoon took home the second prize ($5,000) and third prize ($2,500), respectively.

At Opera San José’s 2022 Irene Dalis Vocal Competition, tenor Kyle van Schoonhoven won the first prize of $5,000; mezzo-soprano Shanley Horvitz was awarded the second prize of $3,000; and baritone Andres Cascante took home the third prize of $1,500.
