Early Ticket Sales Study for the 2022-23 Season

A recent OPERA America study of its Professional Company Members shows a 50% lag in early season ticket sales for the 2022‒2023 season.

In September, OPERA America conducted a study of its member companies to gauge the rate of ticket sales going into the current season. Companies were asked to provide early sales data for their 2022‒2023 seasons as of August 1, 2022. For a point of pre-pandemic comparison, companies were also asked to report early sales data for their 2018‒2019 seasons as of August 1, 2018.

Key findings include:

  • Companies have reduced the number of productions in their 2022‒2023 seasons by nearly 10% and the number of performances by 15%. At the same time, companies are budgeting to sell nearly 20% more seats in the 2022-2023 season with ticket prices up nearly 7%.
  • Ticket sales as of August 1, as a percentage of goals, were down by just over 50%, both in number and revenue. Subscription sales were down one-third and single ticket sales were down 84%.

Thirty companies across all budget sizes contributed to the survey. Full analysis of the data is only available to participating companies.
